About HjørringLIVE

HjørringLIVE is a new concept developed by Hjørring municipality, in collaboration with local educational institutions, with the purpose of making Hjørring a livelier and more attractive city for young people.

Started in 2012, it brought around 4.000 participants – school grade 10 an above –  each year, and has developed continuously ever since. The concept is simple – young students enrolled in high schools and universities in the area gather together in teams and participate in the so-called ‘GAME’, where they need to compete against fellow teams and earn points at different ‘gates’. At the end of the ‘GAME’, the winning teams are announced, and there is a concert for people to entertain themselves after a day filled of energy.

The assignment

We received three case assignments straight from the organizers, as presented below. We used those as a starting point for investigating the problems or potential improvements that the event can benefit from, and then came up with our own concepts and potential solutions. First Week - Fieldwork

During the first week, we had to 'get out of the building'and get as much useful data as we can. So we did just that! Interviews, surveys, field trips, brainstorming sessions, story telling worksops, we did them all.

Video sketches

Our group worked with different ways of video sketching, which had the purpose of visualizing different concepts, and their respective problems and solutions that we came up with. After showing all of those to Dorte, our company representative at U CrAc, she chose one style and a combination of two concepts in order for us to spend our last week on to develop further.

Before anything...

We started our workshop with a meeting with Dorte Reinholdt who is the project leader of HjørringLive. In this meeting we clarified any question regarding the event and got a clear view on her opinion.   We started our first field trip with a small internal brainstorming session. There was a high level of frustration in the air, until we realized what we should do, and how we should do it.

Surveys

To get some both qualitative and quantitative data, we launched a series of surveys, in both english and danish. We personalized them for different purposes and targets, and we proceeded with the usual spamming to get as much answers as legally possible. There are 4 of them, one for students/participants, another for teachers, a third for organizations and one for businesses. Survey results capture

Interviews

For a more in-depth analysis of the event, and to get some useful insights from participants, gate keepers and local businesses, we then did a series of field interviews. To sum up all of our new information we decided to use the method Object Theatre. By using this method we were given the possibility to explore our tacit knowledge and physically concretize our work so far. When applying our case to little figures of different shapes we got a new perspective of HjørringLive.   Each of us in the group was given the task to choose a certain amount of objects and then place them in a sandbox. When everybody in the group agreed on the sandbox was complete, a new face began. In this part of the method the objects were given a meaning. Throughout this method we were given the possibility to realize any problems that could appear throughout HjørringLive. Furthermore we also used a method, called Generic Core Design, to create an overview on all the different aspect in HjørringLive. We divide a circle in three areas, which we named before, during and after. This method gave us the possibility to place the newfound problems, which appeared in the Object Theatre-method, in the area where they belong. In this way we could get an overview on HjørringLive, the core values of the event and any problems that could appear. This is a method we used throughout the project to always have an overview.

We then had our second meeting with Dorte Reinholdt from HjørringLive. In this meeting we presented our ideas and clarified which problems we had discovered. After a long and good discussion we then got some ideas on which directions our group should go. Furthermore we decided it would be a good idea to involve the gatekeepers and get their opinion as well.
We then divided in three groups to create three different concepts. The three concepts were: lack of engagement from volunteers throughout the year, creating a new medieval zone for HjørringLive and to collect points throughout the year. Our focus was now on storyboard and ideas for these sketches. In the three groups we also used different film methods such as the use of prezi, stop motion and animation. But before making the video we used the creation of storyboards.
  This gave us an overview on our ideas, thoughts and problems in a visual way. In the following we created three video sketching. These sketching illustrated different problems and different solutions.
 
The use of different methods gave us a clear view on which method gave us the best result regarding the making of our final video and presentation.
  After our third meeting with Dorte we decided to create our final concept through the use of prezi. With Dorte we decided that this film method was the most ‘professional’ one of the three options.
Throughout our entire workshop we have thought about Jeff Dyers Innovator’s DNA to always have an insight in what we were doing. We started out with challenging status quo, which in this case are HjørringLive. We also took some risks by going to an entire new city and explore it. In Hjørring we then used our behavioural skills by questioning, observing and networking with the students and the people around the city. Afterwards we took all of these new experiences to an associating level so it would be possible for us to innovate our thoughts into new ideas for HjørringLive. Furthermore we went back to the Generic Core Design and placed our new solutions in the after. The problems we chose to go in depth with was creating a follow-up survey so it is possible to get some feedback, to enhance the year long commitment both from the gatekeepers but also from the students. And this is exactly what our final concept is about. We decided to create a fusion between two of our concepts; lack of engagement from volunteers throughout the year and to collect points throughout the year.
