Caseskrivelse:
Marselisborg Centret
Marselisborg Centret is an Aarhus based rehabilitation centre for people with mobility impairments, cognitive challenges and visual impairments. The centre focuses on to make people’s rehabilitation easier in a cozy atmosphere where all patients can find the activities they like and help them in their rehabilitation process. The centre host various events like crolf, small gigs and courses for patients and visitors.
The project – SPARK (H-PARC)
“Sunde (Healthy) Park Activites Rehabilitation and Klima (Climate challenges)
The Purpose of SPARK is to establish outdoor areas at Marselisborg Centret with the dual goal to respond to both climate adaptation activities as well as add more quality to the work of rehabilitates and health promotion for all visitors at the Marselisborg Centret.
The goal is to create a local gathering place – a green climate customised breathing space and meeting place in the middle of Aarhus, which is used by nearby residents and associations in the area, as well as users and staff at Marselisborg Centret and visitors.
SPARK can be a testing ground for the establishment and operation of plants, which combine outdoor areas for rehabilitation with climate adaptation efforts through close cooperation between sectors, magistrates, disciplines, companies, individual citizens and civil society.
Our focus
Marselisborg Cenret is located right next to an unused park area in the centre of Aarhus, which has not been properly taken advantage of and could not been used efficiently by the patients of Marselisborg Centret. This has to be change. Besides the above mentioned, M.C. struggles with plenty of other issues at its rehabilitation area such as accessibility problems, too crowded parking lot and intense traffic among its rehabilitation facilities, which must be taken care of too. On the other hand, M.C. has a unique geographical location, which has outstanding opportunity to collect the huge amount of rain water falling on the area. This is our focus, mainly because of two reasons:
1, The Centre only gets the necessary funding for developing the area if the rain water is collected and used efficiently.
2, The water can be an interesting “theme” for the park, which can make it attractive for people in the neighbourhood to visit.
Our focus on water is also combined with the creation of a unique experience for visitors through design and technology.

Week 1 – Introduction and Field Work
The design process started with a meeting with Ole Mygind from Marselisborg Centret, where he introduced the centre, their challenges and the case we will need to work on in the upcoming 3 weeks. Before the meeting with all the other groups (3 groups), which work on the same case got together and collected our questions, what we wanted to get an answer for before starting the entire process. The first meeting and the first impression was really good and we all got very excited to dig ourselves into the topic more.
We got the amazing opportunity to visit the centre for a day, where we got familiar with the actual issues that Marselisborg Centret face in the daily bases. During the visit we were able to experience the centre on the way the patients do ( being blindfolded and sitting in a wheel chair), which pulled our hearths into the project besides our brains at the same time. We walked approximately 5000kms on that day but totally worth it because we had time to make plenty of interviews, which gave us a very personal input; walk in the park, in the centre in the neighbourhood and identify every major issues, which are waiting for solution.
After the field trip all of us jumped into the pool of crazy, never ending ideas… and we wanted to solve everything! Very soon we had to realise that the topic must be narrowed down and get a main focus. Before that we needed to see the bigger picture behind the project and evaluate the priorities. So the group went through a pre-analysis document developed by Marselisborg Centret ( 100 pages ) and identified the main goals, the main target groups and their characteristics. In addition we merged the ideas developed by us and the centre so we could see that we were on the right track.
We have identified several disturbing issues what, we though could be a great focus for the entire project. These were the followings:
* Accessibility and navigation in the centre
* Bringing patients, employees and visitors from outside together
* Development of the park to attract people
* Utilising the rain water efficiently.
Accordingly we organised our ideas and tried to figure out new ones through a creative workshop with the sand boxed. We truly believe it helped us to come up with some great ideas (it was also confirmed on the next week by Ole)
Week 2 – Ideation and Sketching
At the beginning of the 2nd week we found it very important to organise the identified problems, our solutions and the video snippets in a presentable order. After we had done so, we also prepared some detailed maps of the area so the discussion with the client can go smoother and more efficiently. The preparation contained:
* Issues and solutions
* Maps
* Analysis of Marselisborg Centret report
* Video snippets
During the meeting with the company we went through our weekly research and findings in details. With the help of Ole we were able narrow the wide topic down and we identified our primary focus for the remaining part of the assignment. After a deep and long discussion, taking into consideration the nature of the project, the current issues, and what topics the other groups are working on we settled with a topic, which builds around: WATER & Experience.
“ How could Marsleisborg Centret/Park attract more diverse segments from the surrounding areas with the main focus on water, experience and design.”
In order to come up with the best solution we analysed the possessed information and our predictions with a ver simple tool, developed by Peter Vistisen. The tool helped us to:
* summarise our knowledge about the topic
* highlight some weaknesses and strength
* identify possibilities we passed on before.
and decide about and choose from the ideas, which are more feasible and more realistic to be implemented.
These ideas were prioritised and further developed in depth. The ones, which were selected, we prepared the story boards for them and made the video sketches so they can be easily presented to the company on our next meeting. You can see them in to following video:
Week 3 – Concept Development
During the remaining part of theweek we worked real hard to develop further the ideas, add some new ones and get the concept ready for the final presentation. It was challenging to get some many things done in such a short time but with the kind help of the client and our hardworking team we managed to do our best and come up with a concept which satisfies our client’s needs, which was the most important factor for us.At the beginning of the 3rd and last week we had our last visit from Marselisborg Centret before the final presentation. On the meeting we went through the concepts we created and showed the short videos we made for all ideas we though worth to focus on during the last week of UCrAc. The company’s representative – Ole – was not jus satisfied but also very happy, because we approached a topic with our ideas, which has not been done before. This is how to combine games with water and create attractions and amusement for people from all segments, including patients and people from the neighbourhood equally. This became our final and primary focus for the rest of the week.
