8/9 2014 Meeting with Rasmus Bang

Our first meeting with the rekvirent Rasmus Bang happened the same day the case was given. Rasmus wished to keep the group in the research phase and intentionally tried to not give away any specific solutions to the problems at hand. The meeting gave us a good preparation for the meeting with Johanne, the tourist consulent, and Martin from the tourist bureau.

10/9 2014 Field study in Lønstrup

The trip to Lønstrup consisted of a meeting with Johanne and Martin, as well as a tour in and around Lønstrup to make relevant observations. During the field work we tried to look at the area from the tourists point of view. This was done by touring the area and seek out the major tourist attractions such as the main street of the city, the beach area, the vale formed by the naturedisaster, the mill, the church, the dunes and finally the lighthouse.

12/9 2014 Material Story Lab

To visualise the problem at hand the group participated in a workshop which utilized the Material Story Lab method. This method has a focus on the “show it, don’t tell it” mentallity. It was a great help for the group members to see the problem(s) at hand in an alternative way which led to the discovery of other problem areas which otherwise weren’t as obvious.

The catastrophe that created Lønstrup

What is the design problem depicted?

Lønstrup hides a lot of important stories that deserves to be told for example stories about why Lønstrup looks like it does today and how the future will be for Lønstrup. One of the stories takes place in Bækslugten which is a huge cleft in Lønstrup which a cloudburst made in 1877. This sketch focuses on how to tell the story about the cloudburst back then. This is done through audio and visualization which takes the tourists back in time, so that they can feel the atmosphere from the catastrophe. The problem which this sketch handles is to communicate one of the potential stories to the uninformed tourists.

What is the narrative or message in the sketch?

The users: The main users of the attraction are the tourists in Lønstrup. The attraction is directed towards all of the three tourist segments which we have been working with; children families, couples, and one-day tourists. The attraction contains more components. It has the purpose to inform,

The solution: We have chosen this solution with the audio and visualization because it gives a general impression of what happened back then. This basic technology fits the atmosphere in the old city very well, because it doesn’t create a big contrast to the nature surroundings.

Important parts: In the sketch it is important to look at how the different sounds are being activated to create the authentic situation.

Which techniques did you apply?

We used the stop motion technique in the process making of this video sketch. We needed to have the surroundings but also new equipments in the surroundings, and therefore we found it as a good idea to use pictures from Lønstrup combined with small black and white sketches to visualize the experience. We also used different sounds to emphasize the audio experience, which is a main part of this sketch.

A Historical Journey Through Lønstrup

What is the design problem depicted?

Lønstrup is currently only known because of its lighthouse and church. Those attractions will however disappear in some years. To secure the future of Lønstrup the focus will have to shift. Lønstrup however has a lot of hidden treasures in the form of untold histories. The design sketch shows how the tourist can be guided through Lønstrup using an app. The tour is a historical journey, which follows a person (fictive or real) from birth to death. The historical journey has a set of “touch points” where the tourist will be able to hear an audioclip which tells the story related to the location. The app will then use an arrow to navigate the tourist towards the next touch point in the journey.

What is the narrative or message in the sketch?

The users in relation to the problem are the tourists who visit Lønstrup. The sketch shows the tourists journey through Lønstrup while using an app, which guides her to different historical sites. The sketch focuses on the users experience of and way of navigation through Lønstrup.

Which techniques did you apply?

The main technique used in the design sketch was the Green Screen technique. This was done to be able to use an actor to more accurately show the body language of the tourist and in an attempt to make the design sketch more immersive.

The design sketch was made in Adobe Premiere Pro CS6. The Green Screen technique was accomplished by using the Ultra Key effect. This technique was used on both the background and the phone. The transform effect was also used on the background to scale and move it to appropriately fit the current perspective.

A series of animations were also used to help further illustrate the concept. This was done using various effects. The transform effect was used to change the position and scale of a series of objects over time using anchor points. Lastly the corner pin effect was used to dynamically fit a screen onto the green screen on the iPhone.

Dog Beach

What is the design problem depicted?

The lack of attention to dogs is a problem in Lønstrup, since there are many dog owners who don’t have the possibility of enjoying and letting their dogs enjoy the pleasures that the beach can provide. We have thought of a way to resolve this, by introducing a separate area on the beach, specially equipped for dogs. We have to focus especially on the beach, since there is a serious lack of design. This means that there is actually nothing regarding the well-being of dogs.

As in any other case, this project could have a downside; for example: the dogs make lots of mess, so that must be cleaned and they also need to be provided with fresh drinking water.

What is the narrative or message in the sketch?

The main focus is on the dogs, so the target is the dog owners. The solution to our problem is a well- equipped area for dogs, containing different facilities for dogs as well as dog owners, thus providing activity for everyone. A topic that requires attention, is the equipment and facilities that are to be found on the beach, such as: dog washer, benches, bags etc. And most importantly of course, an area where the dogs can go into the water.

Which techniques did you apply?

We have used mainly parts of videos that were closest to our theme and we edited them using Adobe Premiere Pro. We have also created a picture sequence with stop motion and edited it using Adobe Photoshop before applying it to the video. For guidance we inserted guiding texts throughout the sequences. The audio that we used throughout the whole video is calming music for dogs, providing a pleasant watch that is closely related to dogs.
